The Music Room

Post  Alquiel on Thu 18 Mar 2010, 10:30

I couldn't create a thread about books and leave out music. Especially when there's already been mention of ....loud rock!

So, one night when we wanted some appropriate music, Colt made a WoW playlist.....and it goes something like...

Kate Bush - WoW
Type O Negative - Be My Druidess
Soft Cell - Sex Dwarf
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Warlocks
Tyrannosaurus Rex - Aznageel the Mage
Gary Numan - Warriors
Muse - Knights of Cydonia
Faith No More/ Black Sabbath - Warpigs
Iron Maiden -Weekend Warrior
Monster Magnet - Look to Your Orb For the Warning
ABC - Poison Arrow
Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth (For those Global Channel moments)
Swap - Iceworms
Monty Python - Knights of the Round Table
Kylie Minogue - WoW
Muddy Waters/Paul Rodgers - The Hunter
Black Sabbath - The Wizard
The Sharpe Soundtrack - Rogues' March
Steeleye Span - The Elf-Knight
ASP - Teach Me War

Yes. Our music collection IS that frighteningly varied!

Some good choices there !

I happily stage dived to FNM covering War Pigs back in 1989 when I saw them live on the Real Thing tour, great days ! In fact, my friend lost a shoe at one of their gigs, and had to get the train home bare foot !

And Monster Magnet ! I've not heard them for quite a while, I will go a put on Powertrip tonight when I've got a beer open ;o)

Ah beer and Monster Magnet, reminds me of a certain festival that I enjoyed in my youth. Now a weekend of camping and drinking leaves me with a hangover and a broken back. I am a many of many musical tastes. Groups like Type O Negative and Metallica are on my MP3 player as well as a RATM, RHCP, Audioslave, and anything that is 80s grunge. There are times though that you could walk by my house and hear the croonings of Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin. As I gotten older (and wiser?) I've come to appreciate a bit of Italian Opera. When it comes down to it: "If it sounds good, you'll hear it. If it looks good, you'll see it. If it's marketed right, you'll buy it but if it's real, you'll feel it."

*looks at the festival link and positively drools* Them Crooked Vultures, RATM, Alice In Chains, Muse.....Ooooh!

but if it's real, you'll feel it

Oh yes, this, very much so - to the extent that I can lose myself completely in it, forget myself physically and just float along with the music itself.

I love the links that music creates with feelings and memories. I feel good if I listen to Transglobal Underground - we saw them live at a storytelling festival - and they link me back to this tent full of mellow, happy folk, pretty lights and dancing. And Lynard Skynard's "Freebird", it's always a bittersweet one for me. We danced to it at our wedding, and a few years later, it was the first (and frighteninly appropriate) song I heard as we turned on the radio after my having lost a close family member. She used to practice playing piano on a Saturday, and I'd wake up to her, and know everything was right. There was one piece that she'd play regularly. I since learned it myself, and sometimes play it when the mood takes me.

I really, really want to go to Rock AM Ring! I might settle on something a bit smaller like Roskilde instead, we'll see.

As for my taste in music I listen to pretty much any genre, but very specific things within every genre. My last.fm profile gives a very rough summary of what I'm listening to at the moment and have been listening for the past three years. Smile

I couldn't help but notice you have a bit of Ulver on your last.fm list. I'm a big fan of Ulver, I like all of their albums, including the early dark folk (Twilight Songs) and black metal (Nattans, Bergtatt) albums. "Shadows of the Sun" is fantastic and probably my favourite however. I saw them live in London a few weeks ago, really great gig, Garm is such a good vocalist live.

I like Garm's other bands, in particular Borknagar and Arcturus. In fact, I'm a bit of a fan boy of most Norwegian black metal ;o)

*envy* Considering the amount of live performances they have had you're silly lucky!

I've never been a big fan of their earlier stuff, though. I mostly listen to Peredition City and what's been released after that. Nevertheless it's great (and rare!) to meet a fellow Ulver fan. Very Happy
